DETROIT
- The
Detroit
Tigers
capped
off
their
three-game
series
with the
Los
Angeles
Angels
with a
convincing
9-5
victory
on
Sunday
at
Comerica
Park,
taking
two of
three
games in
the
series.
Kerry
Carpenter
was the
offensive
star for
Detroit,
driving
in three
runs
with a
double,
sacrifice
fly, and
a
three-run
homer.
The
Tigers
jumped
out to
an early
lead,
scoring
two runs
in the
first
inning
on four
consecutive
two-out
hits
that
included
RBI
singles
by Riley
Greene
and Zach
McKinstry.
Detroit
broke
the game
open
with a
four-run
fourth
inning
that
featured
Carpenter's
21st
home run
of the
season,
extending
the
Tigers'
lead to
7-0. The
inning
began
when
Javier
Baez
reached
on an
error,
took
third on
a base
hit by
Cole
Keith
and
scored
on
Gleyber
Torres'
single.
On the
mound,
Casey
Mize
(11-4)
earned
the win,
allowing
two runs
on three
hits
over
five
innings
while
walking
two and
striking
out
five.
Angels
starter
Jack
Kochanowicz
(3-10)
took the
loss
after
giving
up seven
runs on
10 hits
in just
over
three
innings.
The
Angels
showed
some
fight,
with
Nolan
Schanuel
hitting
a
two-run
homer in
the
fifth
and
Logan
O'Hoppe
adding
an RBI
single
in the
sixth to
cut the
deficit
to 7-3.
Both
teams
added
late
runs, as
Greene
hit a
two-run
homer in
the
sixth
while
Luis
Rengifo
connected
for a
two-run
shot in
the
eighth.
A
concerning
moment
occurred
when
Angels
center
fielder
Bryce
Teodosio
ran into
teammates
Taylor
Ward and
Jo Adell
on
eighth-inning
fly
balls,
though
fortunately
no one
was
injured.
Teodosio
had
already
missed
Saturday's
game
after
hitting
his head
on the
fence
Friday.
The
Tigers
(67-51)
now head
to
Chicago
for a
three-game
series
against
the
White
Sox,
while
the
Angels
return
home to
face
their
crosstown
rivals,
the Los
Angeles
Dodgers.
