Detroit
LAKELAND
– The
Detroit
Tigers
have
officially
added
right-handed
pitcher
José
Urquidy
to their
roster,
signing
him to a
one-year,
$1
million
contract
for the
2025
season.
The deal
includes
a $4
million
club
option
for
2026,
featuring
performance-based
incentives
tied to
the
number
of games
started.
These
bonuses
range
from
$150,000
to
$500,000
for
milestones
such as
four,
seven,
10, and
up to 28
starts.
To
accommodate
Urquidy
on the
40-man
roster,
right-hander
Sawyer
Gipson-Long
was
placed
on the
60-day
injured
list
while
rehabbing
from hip
and
elbow
surgeries.
Urquidy,
who is
recovering
from
Tommy
John
surgery,
was also
added to
the
60-day
injured
list.
Detroit
now has
39
players
on its
40-man
roster.
A native
of
Mazatlán,
Mexico,
Urquidy
brings a
wealth
of
experience
from his
five
seasons
with the
Houston
Astros
(2019–23).
Over 79
career
games
(70
starts),
the
29-year-old
compiled
a 27-16
record
with a
3.98 ERA
across
405
innings.
His
postseason
résumé
is
equally
impressive,
including
appearances
in three
World
Series
and a
4-2
record
with a
4.08 ERA
over 15
playoff
games
(eight
starts).
Notably,
he
became
the
first
Mexican-born
pitcher
to
secure
multiple
World
Series
wins
during
his
breakout
2021
season.
Urquidy’s
best
statistical
season
came in

when he
went
13-8
with a
3.94 ERA
over a
career-high
164.1
innings,
playing
a key

the
Astros'
championship
run.
However,
injuries
have
recently
limited
his
availability.
He made
just 16
appearances
in 2023
due to a
shoulder
issue
and
missed
the
entire
2024
season
following
elbow
surgery.
Originally
signed
by the
Astros
as a
non-drafted
free
agent in
2015,
Urquidy
looks to
bounce
back and
make an
impact
in
Detroit
as he
continues
his
recovery.
