Thomas Magee's to host 'Eggs & Kegs' for St. Patty's Day

Holiday beer and breakfast will start at 7 a.m.

DETROIT – Thomas Magee’s Sporting House Whiskey Bar in Eastern Market will kick off St. Patrick’s Day with its first Eggs and Kegs celebration. The party begins at 7 a.m. on March 17, 2014, and feature a corned beef hash and eggs breakfast and earlybird beer specials until 10 a.m.

From 7 a.m.-8 a.m., beer will go for just $1; from 8-9 a.m., the beer costs $2 and from 9-10 a.m., beers sell for $3. Bagpipe players will perform live in the a.m. as well.

“We’re saying ‘crack the eggs, and crack the kegs,’ and if you want an early start, we’ll be open,” said owner Erik Olson. “But the bar will still have its usual hours, meaning we don’t close until 2 a.m.”

Opened officially in January in Eastern Market at 1408 Fisher Freeway, Thomas Magee’s Sporting House offers 12 beers on tap (Guinness, Harp, Newcastle, Strongbow, Modelo, Labatt Blue Light, Brick, Motor City Ghettoblaster, Stella, Frankenmuth and rotating seasonals), a Michigan-Detroit focus and an old-school feel.

The specialty drink -- apt for one of the state’s harshest winters -- is Irish coffee. Magee’s also features a large selection of American, Canadian and Michigan-made whiskeys and an extensive line of vodkas flavored with fresh produce from Eastern Market. Oh yeah, and nine big screens carrying sports.

The bar is open 7 days a week until 2 a.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays, a 4 p.m. start on Mondays and a 9 a.m. start on Saturdays. Happy Hour specials are offered from 4-7 p.m. weekdays. Though the only food for sale is Germack’s nuts and Better Made chips, “people can bring their own food,” Olson noted. Local artist Carl Henry performs every Saturday from noon-4 p.m.
